Greenland, the world's largest island, gains more freedoms from Denmark, including more state responsibilities from their Danish colonizers as well more rights to the massive oil and gas reserves estimated to be under the melting ice of Greenland. Greenlanders voted overwhelmingly for greater autonomy on November 25th, 2008. The act, which paves the way for eventual independence, went into effect on Sunday, June 21st, 2009.
