Cyprus has been divided for more that 40 years...The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) first proclaimed independence in 1983, nearly 20 years after the partition of the Mediterranean island into two sides, Greek and Turkish. Sine 1983, TRNC has been unrecognized as a sovereign nation and has labored through economic embargoes and international isolation. However, with the help of Turkey, the only country that recognizes TRNC as a nation, the small de-facto state has been able to develope infrastructure and state-like institutions such as large universities, modern ports and basic community services, in contrast to other unrecognized states. Although, due to the political and economic dependency on Turkey, TRNC is subject to Turkey;s political agenda, which has included the settling of thousands of Turkish citizens in Cyprus and the long term placement of roughly 35,000 Turkish soldiers, which are among the more serious obstacles in reunification talks with the Greek side of Cyprus, a member of the European Union.
